According to the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve principle, we forget 70% of what we have learned within 24 hours. Going over new ideas a day after class will help increase retention and comprehension—so make time each evening for a quick review. Here are some tips to help you when you’re reviewing.

  1. Break chapters into sections and review the material at the end of each before moving on.
  2. Make notes by summarizing the critical aspects of the reading so you can easily review them without having to reread entire chapters.
  3. Testing yourself with flashcards is a more difficult process than simply reading a textbook, but will lead to better long-term learning.
  4. Create concept maps and diagrams.
  5. Become a teacher or tutor to your study group or partner and learn the course material by explaining concepts to them.
  6. Talk to your teacher & ask questions.
  7. Explain the material to yourself, summarize the key points, ask questions, and think about the big picture.
  8. Practice on old exams.
  9. Explain your answers to others. That will help you to get it clear in your head, and to highlight any areas where you need more work.
