Remove distractions

Have you ever sat down, with big plans of diving deep into the curriculum, only to find yourself an hour or two later looking at silly videos on YouTube?

You’re not alone in this. According to research conducted by Dr. Larry Rosen, professor emeritus at California State University, Dominguez Hills,

"the typical student" is "distracted for at least 5 out of every 15 minutes they set aside to study," most often as a result of texting and social media use.

Here are eight tips to help you avoid distractions.

  1. Establish a study routine.
  2. Make and use to-do-lists.
    1. Writing down your daily duties can help you to keep track of everything that needs to be done — whether it’s two hours or two days from now.
  3. Keep open internet tabs to a minimum.
  4. Install study apps that block distracting websites.
  5. Put your phone on silent or do not disturb.
    1. Also make sure to put it far from your reach and out of sight.
  6. Allow yourself to take breaks in between study sessions.
  7. Find the best study spot.
    1. In the library, in a study hall, outside, at home … wherever you’re most productive.
  8. Get rid of unwanted noise.
    1. Unwanted noises can be a nightmare when you’re trying to concentrate. Use noise-canceling headphones or heavy-duty earplugs.
