Good study habits

Adjusting to the academic workload in university can be difficult. Compared to what you experienced in high school, the curriculum is typically more specialized and the assignments are often more in-depth. It’s important to form good study habits for higher education early on so that you don’t fall behind when faced with more challenging or time-consuming readings, subject material, and exams. Here are some good tips to develop your study habits.

  1. Find a place to study regularly, whether it’s in the university library, a coffee shop or at home.
  2. Keep track of deadlines and important dates. Buy a calendar, and be sure to review it every day and write down due dates for assignments, exams, and other important events.
  3. Don't attempt to cram all your studying into one session. Successful students typically space their work out over shorter periods of time and rarely try to cram all of their studying into just one or two sessions.
  4. Organize a study group. There’s a good chance your fellow students will be interested in getting together to review course materials.
  5. Ask for help. Reach out to tutoring services, your professor, or an advisor if you don’t understand the material or need extra assistance in adjusting to college academics.
  6. Take care of yourself. Your brain is an organ in your body—take care of it by taking care of yourself. Get regular exercise, eat well, don’t overdrink, get good sleep, and take care of your mental wellbeing.

What are some of your good study habits?
